More About Dr.
SandwellStephen Sandwell, MD, is a board certified Neurosurgeon who joined Huntsville Hospital’s Spine & Neuro Center in 2018. He serves communities throughout North Alabama with expert spine and brain care.
Dr. Sandwell got his start in medicine as a Neurosurgery Physician Assistant in Kentucky, after graduating Cum Laude from Alderson-Broaddus College’s Physician Assistant program in Virginia. After working for five years as a Physician Assistant, he felt he could better serve patients if he became a Neurosurgeon, so he did just that.
Dr. Sandwell earned his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He then completed a seven-year Neurosurgery residency at the University of Rochester in New York.
Dr. Sandwell specializes in back surgery, thoracic and lumbar conditions, and cranial and peripheral nerve treatments. He treats spine and brain issues such as:
- Lower back and neck pain
- Herniated discs
- Spinal fractures
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Brain tumors
- Spinal stenosis
- Spondylolistheses
- Pituitary tumor resection
- Spine and brain trauma
Dr. Sandwell takes extra time with his patients, explaining what he sees in their MRI scans and developing a treatment plan that best suits them. He is conservative when it comes to surgery and prefers to try other treatment methods first. He understands the stress and discomfort spine issues can cause and loves helping patients get back to living without pain.
Dr. Sandwell goes the extra mile for his patients by leading our satellite clinic in Florence, so patients don’t have to drive to Huntsville to see him.
His professional affiliations include: American Association of Neurological Surgeons; and Congress of Neurosurgeons.
In his spare time, Dr. Sandwell enjoys fly fishing and spending time with his wife and children.
